Some parts of the book did drag, with repeated conversations that didn’t reveal anything more about the characters’ desires or beliefs. His platonic relationship with Moira Davidson is perhaps one of the most heartbreaking developments of the book. He talks about going on leave in September. Yet he continues to act as if his death is merely him returning to America, to his wife and children. One of the main characters, Dwight Towers, believes that he will die. Choose to believe that somehow everything will be okay and continue to live life day by day, planning for the future.Choose to believe that you will die in a matter of months and try to cram in everything you’ve ever wanted to do.For most people in Melbourne, the real enemy is reality. There’s no unlikely hero or rebel alliance trying to right the wrongs and fight the god fight. You know that radiation cloud is coming but the war is over. Even John Marsden’s Tomorrow series-the closest thing I can think of-is a bit of a stretch. I actually haven’t read anything like it. But you don’t get many books like this set in Australia. I was worried that an apocalyptic future book written in the 50s wouldn’t be interesting or exciting for me. In less than one year, the radioactive cloud will reach those living in southern Australia and wipe out the last of the human race. In 1963, a nuclear war has destroyed the Northern Hemisphere and radioactive dust is drifting south at a steady rate.
